Heat-trap gas output rose in U.S. last year - WASHINGTON -- The government reported a steep increase in U.S. emissions of heat-trapping carbon dioxide as international negotiators were wrapping up talks to complete a global warming pact President Bush has rejected. The unusually large 3.1 percent jump in carbon dioxide emissions in the United States in 2000 was the biggest since the mid-1990s. At fault, the Energy Information Administration said Friday, were strong economic growth, more use of fossil fuels due to colder weather and a drought that impeded hydroelectric power generation. Carbon dioxide produced from burning fossil fuels is the most prevalent of the so-called greenhouse gases, whose growing concentration in the atmosphere is thought to be warming the earth. Many scientists believe the warming, if not stopped, will cause severe climate changes over the next century. The government's new report, which showed U.S. emissions in 2000 were nearly 14 percent higher than in 1990, coincided with the last day of talks in Morocco aimed at reaching a deal on rules to cut greenhouse gases. source: CCTimes 2001.11.11
